George Lechanche of France developed what turned out to be the forerunner or the world's first widely used battery: the zinc carbon cell in the 1860's. By 1880 Alessandro Volta developed what is called a "dry" cell which eliminated the hazard of spilling as experienced in the "wet" cell.
