Fiber-optics is one of the less expensive ways to transmit
information at a very high speed. Fiber-optic cables can transmit
information 26,000 times faster than the twisted pair, and are
considerably smaller then the phone line and coaxial cable wires.
Although, fiber-optic lines are only 0.127 mm in diameter, they
more immune to interference and lighter and less expensive than
phone and cable lines. Fiber-optic lines transmit information
through pulses of lights at light speed instead of pulses of
electricity. However, fiber-optics can carry vast amounts of
information at a time, they are limited in the amount of distance the
information can be carried. As technology increases, fiber optics
are quickly replacing the use of the twisted pair phones lines
because of their lesser cost and more efficient transmission.
