Relationship between electric field and electrostatic potential

We examined the following relationship earlier in the semester:

Given the electric field along a curve joining two points, the electrostatic potential difference between the points is found by evaluation of the above line integral.

Given the electrostatic potential, defined at points described by Cartesian coordinates,

the electric field is the negative gradient of the potential.
