Four "kinds" of integrals in PHYS208 so far:

- Direct integration of
*d***E** or *d*V over charge distributions
- Line integrals over

- Surface integrals to find the electric flux for application of Gauss's law
- Volume integrals to find the charge enclosed by gaussian surface

Situations in PHYS208 where Gauss's law may be used to evaluate
the electric field at a point:

**Point (or spherical) symmetry**

-- example: point charge, sphere of charge

-- gaussian surface to use:
**sphere centered about center of charge distribution**
**Line (or cylindrical) symmetry**

-- example: infinite line of charge, infinite cylinder of charge

-- gaussian surface to use:
**closed cylinder sharing axis of charge distribution**
**Sheet (or planar) symmetry**

-- example: sheet of charge, conducting surface

-- gaussian surface to use:
**thin can with end caps parallel to surface**
