Find the effective dipole moment far away from a split-ring of charge.

Solution:

We would like to examine the electric field far from the ring and compare to the field dependence of a point dipole. A point away from the center must be considered so that we may consider the limit far away. There are two possibilities that should give the same answer far away:

on axis of the ring
to the bottom/top in the plane of the ring

Answer: Effective dipole moment is p = (4 Q a) / pi.
