How to get off

After being done with Mathematica, exit it choosing Quit from the File menu. You may want to save your work as a Mathematica notebook, extension nb. Then always check if a stray process is not running by typing in mahler's window:
ps
The list of processes will appear. If there is a line like this:
PID TTY TIME CMD
22718 pts/17 0:00 Mathemat

kill Mathematica by entering:
kill 22718
Repeat the ps command to check if it worked. If it did not, enter instead:
kill -9 22718
and check again. Then type exit to logoff from mahler and possibly another time to logoff from strauss. To finish Exceed session click Exit on the window displaying computers willing to manage. Then logoff from MS Windows or Unix by using proper menus. If you have forgotten to kill a runaway Mathematica process and it continues to run, the simple ps command will not show it on the next login. You have to enter instead:
ps -ef | grep your_user_name
