The Program at a Glance...

The Henry = Rutgers=20 Scholars Program is the most respected and rewarding undergraduate=20 experience at the University. Students in their senior year are given = the=20 opportunity to pursue original, graduate level research on a topic of = their=20 choice within their major. Each Henry Rutgers Scholar works with a = faculty=20 advisor on a two-semester, 12-credit independent research project, which = culminates in a written thesis and an oral defense before a faculty=20 committee.

The Henry Rutgers Scholars Program saw its first 21 students graduate = in=20 1951. The Program has now grown to include over 2000 alumni.

The research that students pursue in the Program is key to their = intellectual=20 formation and pre-professional preparation, and is the stepping-stone to = some of=20 the finest graduate, law, business and medical schools in the nation. = The=20 success of the Program lies in the sense of accomplishment and = self-confidence=20 the students gain in completing of their projects. The measure of the = success of=20 the Program is the high number of Henry Rutgers Scholars who go on to = graduate=20 or professional study.

Application Information

Admission into the Program is at the discretion of the Director, = who=20 reviews the proposal and the applicant's overall academic record. = Please=20 note the only Rutgers College Students are eligible to apply.=20
Students wishing to apply for the Henry Rutgers thesis must have a = cumulative grade point average of 3.4, both in the major and = overall.=20
Normally, six credits of the thesis sequence may be used in = satisfaction=20 of major requirements, but students should always verify this with = their major=20 department.=20
Both semesters, a total of 12 credits, must be completed in order = to=20 receive degree credit.=20
Disciplinary Clearance: A student who has been placed on=20 Disciplinary Probation (as defined in the University Code of Student = Conduct)=20 prior to submitting the Application will be ineligible to participate = in the=20 Henry Rutgers Scholars Program. How does a student qualify for the Henry = Rutgers=20 Scholars Program?

To qualify, the student must be entering the senior year at = Rutgers=20 College and have a cumulative average of 3.4 (in the major and = overall) at the=20 second semester of the junior year. The Henry Rutgers Scholars = Project=20 consists of 12 credits, six of which normally count toward = satisfaction of the=20 major and six toward electives. Prior completion of at least 18 = credits within=20 the major is required. The student enrolls in the course during the=20 registration period. It is listed under Arts & Sciences=20 (12:090:497-498) in the Schedule of Classes.

How does the Project differ from Departmental=20 Honors?

The Henry Rutgers Scholars Project is a 12-credit course which = constitutes=20 a major commitment in terms of time and energy. As such, it is not for = every=20 senior. The student must be highly motivated and prepared to take = risks. Over=20 the course of the year, the scholars will learn how to budget time and = financial resources. The student will be expected to produce a thesis = which=20 reflects twelve credits of work.

Departmental Honors consists of 6 credits and usually involves = taking an=20 honors seminar within the major discipline.

Students completing a Henry Rutgers Scholars Project may also be = eligible=20 for Departmental Honors. The student should consult the undergraduate = director=20 in the major department to find out the requirements for Departmental = Honors.=20 In either case, only twelve credits may be applied upon completion of = the=20 project.

What is the role of the advisor?

The choice of an advisor is one of the most important aspects of = the=20 Project. As in graduate research, scholars will be expected to work = closely=20 with an advisor during the progress of the Project. Periodic meetings = between=20 the student and advisor are essential to the successful completion of = the=20 thesis. A good advisor should maintain a healthy rapport with the = scholar=20 while at the same time offering challenges. An advisor should provide = guidance=20 during every stage of the thesis process. Therefore, scholars should = select=20 advisors with whom they feel comfortable as well as once whose work = they=20 respect.

How does the student decide on a topic?

In choosing a topic, the emphasis should be on personal interest = and=20 scholarly creativity. The student should keep in mind that a year will = be=20 spent researching and writing about this topic. A topic should = intrigue as=20 well as offer opportunity for substantial original research. It is = very likely=20 that the student will have only a general idea of a topic at the = beginning of=20 the year. This is why it is important that the student discuss the = topic with=20 the advisor as quickly and thoroughly as possible. The topic of the = thesis=20 will undergo considerable amount of refinement during the course of = the year=20 so the scholar should not be overly concerned with focus at the=20 beginning.

How is the amount of financial assistance=20 decided?

The student may submit a budget along with the thesis proposal to = the Henry=20 Rutgers Scholars Project Committee. The budget may include such = expenses as=20 photocopying, supplies, and travel. The Committee decides the stipend = awarded=20 based on the quality of each application and the availability of = funds.=20 Scholars are notified of the stipend amount when their thesis proposal = is=20 accepted. The student will receive a check for that amount from the = Dean's=20 Office.

What are the main deadlines?

The importance of deadlines in such an unstructured program as the = Henry=20 Rutgers Scholars Project cannot be minimized. There are only two = formal=20 deadlines in the Project. The initial proposal is due no later than = the end of=20 the first week in the first semester. Early submission is strongly=20 recommended. Most successful scholars have formulated an initial idea = for a=20 proposal during the second semester of the junior year. The final = written=20 thesis is due in mid-December for scholars beginning in the spring = semester=20 and in mid-April for scholars starting in the fall semester. Aside = from the=20 formal deadlines, however, the scholar should create other deadlines = in=20 conjunction with the advisor. This practice ensures that enough time = will be=20 left for each stage of the thesis process.

How long should the written thesis be when it = is=20 finished?

There are no requirements for maximum or minimum length of the = thesis. We=20 do require, however, that the thesis be the product of extensive = research and=20 thought. The individual advisor may have some suggestions as to = length, but=20 the quality of the thesis is the primary concern.

How are grades determined in the Henry Rutgers = Scholars=20 Project?

At the end of the first semester, if the scholar is progressing=20 satisfactorily, the advisor will submit a grade of "H". When the final = grade=20 is determined, the "H" grade of the previous semester will be replaced = by the=20 final letter grade earned for the Project.

The final grade is determined by the advisor on the basis of the = written=20 thesis and an oral defense. The student and the advisor confer on the=20 selection of one faculty member to sit on the defense committee. This = faculty=20 member is given a draft of the thesis to read. The procedure of the = defense=20 differs slightly depending on the discipline. In general, the defense = consists=20 of presenting conclusions and answering questions which the advisor = and the=20 faculty reader have regarding the thesis. The scholar will have the = guidance=20 of the advisor in preparing for the oral defense and should be = reasonably=20 equipped to answer difficult questions after one full year of = research.

After the defense, the faculty reader and the advisor discuss the = final=20 grade alone. The student is then informed of the thesis grade. = Subsequently,=20 the advisor submits a form to the Dean's Office notifying the Dean of = the=20 decision.
