Research in Physics and Astronomy

The faculty, staff scientists, post docs, and graduate students at the University of Delaware continue a tradition of excellence in research. In recent years, this effort has resulted in average annual publication rates of well over 100 scholarly articles, and external research grants in excess of $6 million per year for the joint graduate program faculty.

Research in physics and astronomy covers a wide range of subjects: from the expanse of cosmology and relativity to the submicroscopic world of nuclear and particle physics, from the ordered world of solid state physics to the chaos of nonlinear physics, from physics applied to the life cycle of stars to physical interactions at the atomic and molecular level. From basic physics to applications, technologically important developments are investigated in the materials physics laboratories.

Research Facilities

The department research is supported by two machinists, technical electronics staff, and two computer systems managers. The department has a fully equiped CNC machine shop, wood shop, and separate student machine shop where faculty and the machinists can mentor students in basic construction skills for scientific equipment.

Four electron microscopes, several x-ray diffractometers, an ultrafast laser laboratory, and a massive parallel computer are a few of the resources available to researchers in the department.
