The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers two new astrophysics courses for Spring 2007.

Undergraduate

  • PHYS333 FUNDAMENTALS OF ASTROPHYSICS: A quantitative approach to astronomy and astrophysics. Treatment of stars, the interstellar medium, galaxies, and cosmology. 3 credits
    The text will be Carroll & Ostlie, "Introduction to Modern Astrophysics", published by Addison Wesley.
    PREREQ: PHYS208, MATH243 or permission from instructor, Professor Stan Owocki.

Graduate

  • PHYS 833 ASTROPHYSICS OF COMPACT OBJECTS: Formation and evolution of white dwarf stars, neutron stars and black holes. Topics include supernovae, cataclysmic variables, x-ray and gamma-ray sources. 3 credits
    RESTRICTIONS: PHYS633 suggested. Professor Jim MacDonald.
