Title: Francis Alison Award lecture: The Magic of Magnets

Abstract:

Magnets have fascinated people since ancient times, long considered mysterious and magical. These objects are real, not supernatural, and their properties have practical uses that are lodged in history. The permanent magnet characteristics of loadstone (Fe3O4), for example, were known to ancient Greeks, later used by the Chinese as a navigation compass before the Europeans discovered it about 1200 AD. Today, magnets play a major role in the worlds economy. Magnets are integral components in power generation and distribution, automobiles, telecommunications, computers, audios and videos, and, most recently, biological systems.

In this talk, I will highlight my research experiences that played a role in the development and understanding of these magical objects. The emphasis is on high-performance magnets and magnetic nanoparticles for information storage and biological applications.
