Fields of Research ASTROPHYSICS RESEARCH: For many years I have studied white dwarf stars, the final stage in the life cycle of low mass stars like our sun. In these objects matter reaches extreme densities, since the mass of the sun is compressed into a volume that is the size of the earth and densities reach 107 grams per cubic centimeter. My particular interest is in using the fundamental properties of these stars to test our understanding of their basic nature, in their chemical composition, and in their pulsations. Collaborating with John Gizis, I have opened up some research on brown dwarfs, failed stars which are bigger than Jupiter yet too small for nuclear fusion in their cores. |
