Fields of Research

Following completion of his graduate education, Dr. Pittel held appointments as Postdoctoral Fellow at the Bartol Research Foundation, Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado and Research Associate at the University of Pittsburgh. He joined the Bartol faculty in 1973 and currently holds the rank of Professor. In 2000, he was appointed Acting Director of the Bartol Research Institute following its integration into the College of Arts and Science of the University of Delaware and in 2001 was appointed Director.

Dr. Pittel's research has centered on nuclear structure theory. Particularly recognized is his work on the role of the proton-neutron interaction in producing nuclear deformation throughout the periodic table. More recently, his efforts have focused on the study of nuclei far from stability, now becoming accessible through the use of radiaoctive beam facilities. He has recently been involved in the development of a new method for treating deformed nuclei out to the nucleon drip lines and beyond and is currently exploring the possibility of applying the Density Matrix Renormalization Group method in nuclei structure.

Another area of Dr. Pittel's research is the application of nuclear structure to problems in astrophysics and particle physics. Areas in which he and his coworkers have made important contributions include (1) dark matter detection, (2) solar neutrino detection and (3) neutrinoless double beta decay.

Dr. Pittel is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a Corresponding Member of the Mexican National Academy of Sciences.
