John Gizis
Fields of Research Astronomy and Astrophysics John Gizis received his B.S. in Physics and Astronomy at Yale University in 1992 and his Ph.D. in Astronomy at the California Institute of Technology in 1998. He was a postdoctoral researcher with the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst from 1997 to 2000. He then accepted a staff research scientist position, again with the 2MASS project, at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC) at Caltech. In September 2001, he joined the University of Delaware as an assistant professor. Dr. Gizis' research work is aimed at measuring and understanding the properties of very-low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. Gizis and the 2MASS rare objects team have discovered more than 100 nearby brown dwarfs. They developed the new L and T dwarf temperature classifications. His current studies aim to understand the physical properties and evolution of brown dwarfs, including their magnetic fields, atmospheric structure, dust clouds, and binary frequency. Gizis has worked on completing the census of dim M dwarfs in the solar neighborhood. He developed the spectroscopic classification system of M subdwarfs (metal-poor low-mass stars) and continues to study their properties. M dwarfs and M subdwarfs offer new opportunities to study Galactic structure and star formation history. He is the author and co-author of 54 peer-reviewed journal articles. |
