Fields of Research

John W. Bieber received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Maryland for theoretical work on the transport of cosmic rays. During a year at the University of Kiel (Germany) and four years at Caltech, he employed data from the interplanetary probe, Helios and the Earth-orbiting satellite, IMP 8 in studies of particle acceleration and transport in a variety of settings including the solar corona, the interplanetary medium, and Earth's magnetosphere.

Since coming to Bartol in 1982, Dr. Bieber has pursued both theoretical and observational studies of cosmic rays and the solar wind. He is Principal Investigator of the Bartol neutron monitor network, currently comprising 6 stations in Antarctica, Greenland, Canada, and the United States. A principal theoretical interest is to apply modern concepts of turbulence theory to long-standing problems in cosmic ray transport theory.
