Living with a Star, the Emerging Science of Space Weather

Assistant Professor Michael Shay
Department of Physics and Astronomy
University of Delaware
Solar Flare

Just as it is important to know if the big baseball game this Saturday will be rained out, it is also important to know what "space weather"astronauts and satellites will experience. While regular weather predicts the temperature and precipitation, space weather predicts radiation, for radiation can damage satellites and injure astronauts. Like regular weather, space weather is the result of the interaction of the sun and the Earth. The sun is constantly blowing out a wind of plasma (an ionized gas) at one million miles per hour. This wind slams into the magnetic field of the Earth, and the interaction causes magnetic explosions which generate damaging radiation. This talk will discuss space weather and the physics driving it: the interaction of electric and magnetic fields with plasmas. There will be numerous demonstrations to highlight this physics, including the destruction of a soda can using magnetic fields.
