Course Transfers

The problem of course transfers between post-secondary institutions in the United States is a difficult one. Many issues are involved including schedule convenience, academic rigor, and cost. The department of physics and astronomy recognizes these issues and has tried to balance these to maintaining the objective of ensuring the best possible education for the students. The department will facilitate the transfer of courses from any of the several thousand accredited, degree-granting institutions. The accreditation of these institutions varies from research institutions offering all degrees, to universities that offer only baccalaureate and masters degrees, to technical schools that offer technical of associate degrees. The Carnegie Foundation regularly completes the exhaustive charge of classifying ALL institutions in the United States.

transfer graph

In order to ensure the best opportunities to the students, a transfer assignment paradigm is used that maps the classification of an institution to the transfer of courses. A graph of how this assignment has been made is shown below for clarification. This transfer paradigm is intended as a general representation. The committee accepts than colleges and universities, or individuals, may petition for the transfer of courses at the next higher Carnegie ranking based on the exceptional excellence and national recognition of their educational program.

Substitute Credit

Ultimately, whether or not a course is accepted to fulfill the requirements for a degree is a judgement call made by the department or college that administers the degree. For example, an engineering student whose transfer PHYS courses do not exactly match the PHYS courses required by the degree program may have a course substitution approved by the advisor. For further details, the academic advisor should be contacted.

Course Transfer Examples

  1. Transfer of a 400 level, junior year course from a Doctorate level University to the University of Delaware will be allowed as both elective and equivalent requirement without question.
  2. Transfer of a 330 level course from a Masters I,II institution to the University of Delaware will be allowed as elective credit but not as an equivalent/required credit.
  3. Transfer of a 100 level course from an Associate institution to the University of Delaware. ELECTIVES normally taken during the first year of post secondary study, i.e. 100 level courses, will transfer, however, a course meeting an essential requirement for graduation in physical science at the 100 level will NOT normally transfer. A good alternative would be to take first or second year courses at a Baccalaureate I,II or Masters I,II where courses up to 199 and 299 will transfer as equivalent requirements, respectively.

For those wishing to transfer to the University of Delaware from their current institution, the advised latest time for this transfer can be also determined from the table. An efficient transfer from a Baccalaureate I,II to the University of Delaware should occur at the end of the first or beginning of the second year of study.

Delaware Course Transfers

Courses for public institutions within Delaware are regulated to some degree by the state. Details are found in the course transfer matrix for these institutions.
