Support Guidelines

Students are supported on four types of fellowships during their graduate studies. The lowest of these is the Grading Assistant (GA) followed by a Teaching Assistant (TA), a Research Assistant position (RA) and some exceptional students may be supported on a Research Fellowship (RF). A normal progression for student support is to initially be a TA and then move into a RA position funded by their Research Advisors grant. The following outlines the progression in support.

  1. First Year Students in good academic standing are guaranteed support as a GA or TA.
  2. TA support for the summer is usually available only to First Year Students.
  3. There is a total limit of 3 summers for TA support.
  4. Students can be supported as a GA/TA up to 7 semesters. This is a limit of 7 semesters as a GA or TA, during the period of matriculation in the graduate program.
  5. Students who enter with a MS degree cannot be supported as a GA or TA after 5 years in the graduate program.
  6. Students who enter with a BA or BS degree cannot be supported as a TA or GA after 7 years in the program.
  7. Students in the MS program will not be supported as a GA or TA beyond the end of the summer after their fourth semester.
  8. Students who have not formed a PhD Dissertation Committee within 1 year after passing the Qualifying Exam are not elgible for support.
  9. Students in their second term on probation are not elgible for any Department support.
