Requirements for admissions

Baccalaureate graduates of accredited colleges are eligible to apply to the University of Delaware for admission to a graduate program. To be considered for admission to the Physics and Astronomy, applicants must meet the following admission requirements:

  • A baccalaureate degree in physics or in a closely allied field of science or mathematics.
  • A minimum undergraduate grade-point average in science and mathematics courses of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Three letters of strong support from former teachers or supervisors.
  • Graduate Record Exam (GRE), Verbal, Quantitative and Analytic, and the GRE Physics Subject Test scores.
  • Non-native speakers of English (foreign students) must have a minimum score of 600 on the TOEFL (250 for the CTOEFL) to be eligible for financial support.

Admission is selective and competitive based on the number of well-qualified applicants and the limits of available faculty, facilities and financial resources. Those who meet stated minimum academic requirements are not guaranteed admission, nor are those who fail to meet those requirements necessarily precluded from admission if they offer other appropriate strengths.

If you consider applying to our program, but do not meet some of the admissions requirements listed above, please contact us. We will be glad to advise you on how how you may strengthen your application to compensate for this.
